Your voice did not disappear when something bad happened.

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist.

April is over.

And I want to take a moment before we turn the page — because this last month was something in the Healthy Voice Community, on Substack, and on YouTube.

We built a map. Not of a voice, but of the body the voice lives in. The psoas, the gut, the fascia, the lymph, the jaw, the face, the chest — all the way to the immune system. Eight essays. Eight body systems. One complete picture of why the voice is never just a voice.

And this week, two final pieces of that map arrived — the most beautiful of the whole month.

The singers who leave you undone are not always the most technically accomplished. They are the ones willing to let the sound come from somewhere unprotected. The chest. The heart space. The place the body has been quietly armoring for most of its life.

A closed chest is a broken bridge. The technique is fine. The willingness is what's missing.

And then — the science of why it matters. Group singing produces a rapid, measurable, clinically significant immune response. After one rehearsal. One session. Our community session this week was not just a pleasant activity. It was an immune intervention.

The voice is not just expression. It is not just art. It is, in the most literal scientific sense we have, medicine.

Three videos this week — each one a different angle on the same story.

Your voice didn't disappear when something bad happened. It disappeared when you stopped trusting yourself. The freeze response — the jaw that clamped, the throat that seized, the tongue that held everything back — is not a character flaw. It is a nervous system response. And it can be released.

If the freeze response is the body bracing against threat, perfectionism is the mind doing the same thing. Shallow breath. Held gut. The constant low-level terror of getting it wrong. This is not a technique problem. It is a fear problem. And fear lives in the belly.

And if you've ever quit a practice — meditation, journaling, singing, healing — and then had to start over, this one is for you. You didn't fail. You're on the path. I started my own healing journey at 16. It took decades to understand that stopping and starting is not failure. It's the nature of the work.

Every time you do something scary with your voice — speak up, set a boundary, walk away from something toxic — your voice improves.

Inside the community this week: DIAL V FOR VOICE. 🔍

A murder mystery in seven diction lessons. One technique per day. Cheesy chapter titles. Real results.

Meet Vera Lane — voice teacher, reluctant detective, excellent diction. The case: a tenor has gone missing the night before his debut. The clues: T and D consonants, B and P lip sounds, liquid L and R, vanishing vowels, suspicious sibilants, and something found dead in the back of the throat.

Diction is the difference between a witness and a ghost.

This is the most fun we've had all month — and also one of the most technically rigorous series we've done. The case closes Sunday. If you want to be in the room when it does:

🎙️ What I'm Noticing in Sessions This Week

The determination I'm witnessing right now is something I don't take lightly. People are willing to go deep — to feel the hurt, sit in the discomfort, and keep moving forward anyway. Not because it's easy. Because they've decided the voice on the other side of the fear is worth it. That decision, made again and again in small moments, is what healing actually looks like. I am consistently humbled by it.

📚 What I'm Reading / Listening To / Noticing

  • 📖 Reading: Far Journeys by Robert Monroe — the second book in his out-of-body experience trilogy. Consciousness exploring beyond the body while I spend my days helping people get back into theirs. The irony is not lost on me.
  • 📺 Watching: The Golden Girls — because sometimes the most healing thing you can do is laugh at something warm and familiar. Dorothy's delivery alone is a masterclass in timing.
  • 👀 Noticing: tensions are high out there. I feel it in the room, in my sessions, in the messages coming in. People are facing some of their greatest fears right now — not small things, but the deep ones. As someone who studies cycles and patterns, none of this surprises me. What does continue to surprise me, every single time, is how many strong people there are. Quietly, stubbornly, doing the work anyway.

And here's what someone said this week after completing the Voice Liberation Method:

"Thank you, Bella! I've enjoyed these lessons and found them challenging. My fear is deep but improving. Plan on going through all the lessons again and again until I truly feel my voice is free."

— E.M. ❤️

That's not a review. That's a commitment. And it's exactly what this work is for.

✍️ Journal Prompt

Think about the last time you made a statement that came out sounding like a question. What were you actually trying to say? And what made you hedge it — habit, fear, the room you were in, the person you were talking to?

Write the statement again. This time, let it land with a period.

🌀 This Week's Practice

Today, listen to your own pitch when you speak. Not to fix it — just to notice.

Do your sentences rise at the end, even when you're making a statement? Do you declare things, or do you ask permission for them?

Pick one sentence today — just one — and let it land downward. Feel the difference in your body when your voice arrives somewhere instead of floating away.

That landing is the beginning of Pitch Perfect month.

Keep going — because the world needs your unique voice. 🎙️

🎓 The Voice Liberation Method Is Helping Hundreds

Seven weeks of trauma-informed voice work — vocal technique, speech exercises, guided visualizations with original music, nervous system education, and journal prompts — all inspired by the same methods I use in my private coaching sessions.

A single private session with me is $150 for 60 minutes. Seven sessions would cost you $1,050. The Voice Liberation Method gives you over 7 hours of that same work for $97. That's a savings of over $950.

This is the course I wish I'd had when I was a young classical singer with tension in my shoulders that nobody thought to ask about. Now it's yours.

The harmonium changed my practice. There's something about the drone — it drops you into your body faster than almost anything else I know. I've had both of mine for years and I wouldn't trade them.

Old Delhi Music is where I got them. Colorado-based, independently owned, exceptional quality.

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist. June opened this week with something I've been building toward for a long time. Not just new content. A new argument. One I've been assembling from seven months of coaching sessions, thousands of YouTube comments, and years of personal study — and this week it finally came together in one place. Here's the short version: a lot of the people who come to me with voice problems don't have voice problems. They have...

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist. Sometimes you have to go quiet to finish the thing. This week was that week. No YouTube video — the first time since I started the channel. Exhaustion and overwhelm, so I turned inward. Just the particular stillness that happens when something is almost done and needs your full attention to cross the finish line. Two things crossed it this week. VOCAL RECESS is now available outside the community. 🎭 Seven weeks of...

Something I've been building for a while is finally ready. VOCAL RECESS — The Healthy Voice Archive, Volume 1 — is now open. Seven weeks of voice work that doesn't feel like voice work. A noir murder mystery where every chapter hides a diction lesson in the prose. A Grimm-style fairy tale about a child who wandered into a forest and forgot how to find their way home. A vintage romance novel written to be read aloud — because the reading IS the somatic work. A punk week. A comedy week. A Shel...
