In the beginning was the Word. And the Word has always been yours.

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist.

Something landed this week.

I've been writing a 7-day series on language โ€” on the magic hidden inside the words we use every day, the spells we cast without knowing, the inherited curses we've been carrying since before we knew language could be used as a weapon. And by Day 3, something in the room had shifted.

One reader wrote: "I am someone whose voice is meant to be heard."

Just that. In the comments. Like she was finally answering a question she'd been asked her whole life and never given the space to answer.

That's what language does when you use it consciously. It restructures reality. One sentence at a time.

Last week I received a letter from a reader that I've been sitting with ever since. I want to share part of it with her permission.

"I've seen you blossom, to become luminous, to open and expand into what seems to me to be your life purpose since you finished teaching voice lessons and began The Healthy Voice. You have become an instrument to those of us who are seeking to find our true voice, perhaps for the first time, or once again."

โ€” Patti Evans

I read that and I had to put my phone down for a moment.

That is indeed my intention.

๐Ÿ“š IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORDA 7-Day Series on Language, Power & the Magic in Your Mouth

Seven days. Seven dispatches. By the end, you will never hear language the same way again โ€” including the language you use about yourself.

Here's the arc:

Day 1 โ€” The word "spell" means both arranging letters AND casting a charm. That's not a coincidence. It's a confession. When your third-grade teacher handed you a grammar workbook, she handed you a grimoire. She just didn't know it.

Day 2 โ€” "Just" is a minimizing spell. "Sorry" is its sister-curse โ€” a preemptive hex on your own legitimacy. You were not apologizing. You were performing a self-erasure spell. And it was working.

Day 3 โ€” Every family has a grimoire โ€” passed through tone of voice, through phrases repeated until they sounded like facts. The grimoire was theirs. The voice is yours.

Day 4 โ€” "I could never" is a time spell. It reaches into the future and forecloses it. I could never is how you lock a door that was only closed.

Day 5 โ€” In 1611, a king who personally supervised the torture of accused witches authorized the most influential English document ever written. And encoded a spell of suppression inside it. You were not born believing your voice needed approval. You were taught that.

Day 6 โ€” Abracadabra is Aramaic. Avra kadavra โ€” I will create as I speak. The voice is not how you report what you've created. The voice is how you create.

Day 7 โ€” The most powerful spell in your grimoire is not a word. It is the word you haven't spoken yet. In the beginning was the Word. And the Word has always been yours.

All week the series pointed to one thing: the words that couldn't come out went somewhere. Into the jaw. Into the throat. Into the particular way your voice gets small in certain rooms. This week's videos are about going in to get them back.

Your voice shakes when you finally say the thing you were never allowed to say. That's not weakness. That's your muscles going somewhere they've never been before.

And the jaw remembers every word you held back. Every time you had to swallow what you wanted to say, your jaw learned to grip. No amount of scales will fix this if the muscle memory is still running underneath.

Inside the community this week:

The 30-Day Pitch Perfect Challenge just finished its first week โ€” and we started where all good pitch work starts: with the ear. You cannot sing what you cannot hear. Week 1 is Ear Before Voice. Drone work, interval recognition, intentional listening. The ear leads. The voice follows.

You are not tone deaf. You are undertrained. There's a difference โ€” and this month we address it.

If you want to join the challenge โ€” it's not too late. Drop in wherever we are.

Next week in the community: GAME WEEK 2 โ€” Name That Quality. ๐ŸŽฎ

Most singers spend years trying to develop their ear. This week we do it in seven days โ€” and we make it a game.

Every day โ€” two voice memos, same phrase, two completely different techniques. You listen. You guess. You describe what you hear. The answer reveals the next morning.

Dark vs bright. Breathy vs supported. Chest vs head. Tight vs free. Belted vs floated. Saturday you use that vocabulary on each other. Sunday I tell you everything.

It's ear training. It's a game. And by the end of the week your voice will never sound the same to you again.

What People Are Saying...

"Voice Liberation is full of tools for my toolbox! It's working. I'm trying to get through the vocal exercises then go back and do the lessons! The content. Wow." โ€” Belinda Williams, VLM student

"Once I let go of the fear of singing the song wrong in our last Courage Circle, was when my voice was able to be unleashed. This journey of reclaiming my voice has taught me so much of myself so far." โ€” BellaShanti, Foundation member

"This was a fantastic session. I learned so much about how the vocal instrument works, and the emphasis on somatic awareness opened up a whole new approach for me. It's amazing how one can go for decades using the voice without ever really understanding it, and what a difference it makes when knowledge and experience are put together in a structured way. Also, it was just plain fun." โ€” Steven Brent, Practitioner member

"Working with you has helped me to overcome my fear, follow my own inner voice and give it expression. The Community is very supportive and the content is extremely rich." โ€” Stephanie, Zรผrich, Switzerland โ€” Mastery member

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ What I'm Noticing in Sessions This Week

The people in my sessions are hard workers. Genuinely. They show up, they do the uncomfortable thing, they sit with what comes up instead of running from it. They keep going not because it's easy โ€” but because somewhere in them they know: there is a reward at the end of this. And the reward, in the case of voice work, is not a better audition or a more impressive presentation. It is liberation. The feeling of a voice that belongs to you. Fully. Without apology. I get to witness that happening. Slowly, and then all at once. I don't take it for granted for a single session.

๐Ÿ“š What I'm Reading / Listening To / Noticing

  • ๐Ÿ“– Reading: Far Journeys by Robert Monroe โ€” still in it, still being changed by it.
  • ๐ŸŽต Listening: Mellow Mozart playlist on Spotifyโ€” I find it both stimulating and calming.
  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Noticing: people are carrying so much that hasn't found words yet. Things that are hard to talk about, that create a kind of pressure from the inside. The stress of the unexpressed. And then โ€” this is the part I keep witnessing โ€” someone hums. Someone does a face massage. Someone takes a breath that actually reaches the bottom of the lungs. And the pressure lifts. Not because the hard thing got resolved. But because the body found presence. The state of here, now, only this. That's what the voice work actually does, underneath all the technique โ€” it brings people home to the present moment. And in the present moment, even for just a few minutes, there is only sensation. And sensation, it turns out, is where joy lives.

โœ๏ธ Journal Prompt

All of this work โ€” the language, the body, the breath, the voice โ€” leads somewhere. Not to a perfect performance. Not to a healed past. Not even to a better version of yourself.

It leads to here.

This moment. This breath. This sensation in your chest or your jaw or the back of your throat that you've been too busy or too afraid to feel.

Write about a moment when you were fully present in your body. Not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. Just here, just this, just now. What was happening? What did it feel like? And what would it mean to access that state more often โ€” not through effort, but through your voice?

๐ŸŒ€ This Week's Practice

Sit quietly. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.

Breathe in slowly. On the exhale, hum โ€” low, easy, unhurried.

Don't try to produce anything. Don't perform for anyone. Just let the sound exist in your body for the length of one breath.

Now notice: where are you? Not physically โ€” where is your mind? If it wandered, that's fine. The hum will bring it back. That's the whole practice.

Hum again. And again. Five breaths. Each one returning you to the only place the voice has ever actually lived โ€” here, in the body, in this moment, in you.

Keep going โ€” because the world needs your unique voice. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

๐ŸŽ“ The Voice Liberation Method Is Helping Hundreds

Seven weeks of trauma-informed voice work โ€” vocal technique, speech exercises, guided visualizations with original music, nervous system education, and journal prompts โ€” all inspired by the same methods I use in my private coaching sessions.

A single private session with me is $150 for 60 minutes. Seven sessions would cost you $1,050. The Voice Liberation Method gives you over 7 hours of that same work for $97. That's a savings of over $950.

This is the course I wish I'd had when I was a young classical singer with tension in my shoulders that nobody thought to ask about. Now it's yours.

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist. June opened this week with something I've been building toward for a long time. Not just new content. A new argument. One I've been assembling from seven months of coaching sessions, thousands of YouTube comments, and years of personal study โ€” and this week it finally came together in one place. Here's the short version: a lot of the people who come to me with voice problems don't have voice problems. They have...

A weekly dispatch on voice, healing, and the inner life of a working artist. Sometimes you have to go quiet to finish the thing. This week was that week. No YouTube video โ€” the first time since I started the channel. Exhaustion and overwhelm, so I turned inward. Just the particular stillness that happens when something is almost done and needs your full attention to cross the finish line. Two things crossed it this week. VOCAL RECESS is now available outside the community. ๐ŸŽญ Seven weeks of...

Something I've been building for a while is finally ready. VOCAL RECESS โ€” The Healthy Voice Archive, Volume 1 โ€” is now open. Seven weeks of voice work that doesn't feel like voice work. A noir murder mystery where every chapter hides a diction lesson in the prose. A Grimm-style fairy tale about a child who wandered into a forest and forgot how to find their way home. A vintage romance novel written to be read aloud โ€” because the reading IS the somatic work. A punk week. A comedy week. A Shel...
